Even Genghis Khan was forced to put up 1,500 miles of still visible Mughal torch-light signal towers Calcutta to Bukhara to deal with the impossibility of conquering the area. For thousands of years imperial hubris has been humbled by the brutal mountains of Afghanistan. Gen. Victor Yermakov, a former Soviet commander in Afghanistan, summmed up this by quoting Babur, founder of the Mughal dynasty that ruled much of central Asia in the 1500s: "Afghanistan has not been and never will be conquered, and will never surrender to anyone." Of course it will all be different with the United Stateâ€™s occupation, right?
